Laila Arza

A Prelude to Laila: A Metaphor on Life's Journey
(by a Friend and a Fan)

For most people, life is about a journey. There's a start, a destination, and the journey itself. From a slightly different angle, there's the past, the future, and the present. In Laila's perspective, the start (or the beginning, in that matter) may come in a form of a plan that was made in the past and the future could be the planned destination. But most importantly for Laila, the present - or the journey itself - is reflected through her abstract presentation that interprets a mix of a confident start, curiosity and pleasant mistery, unfortunate turns or u-turns, and ultimately, an ending that may be surprisingly different than what you have first imagined. Some things in life are simply unpredictable and something Higher than life itself is making a plan unbeknownst to us.

Laila's work of art is truly an expression of this perspective. Her daring juxtaposition of mixed media and elements is a beautiful depiction of life and the surprises behind it. Laila's abstract presentation and dripping technique are her interpretation of life's simplified complexity, a reflection of both freedom and spiritual creativity. During the dripping process, she herself is continuously mesmerized by the fact that she is momentarily detached from her ability to control the process and eventually by the result. Right then, she just humbly submits to the nature's will to take command.

While her method is unique, Laila's inspiration comes from every little matter that belongs to her daily life. Her closeness to the medical world and past professional experience and family certainly contribute to a lot of her ideas and brush strokes. Her pronunciation of life line - the centre of her theme - is Laila's tribute and worshipping for the mistery and miracle of life.

Laila's Life Journey

Laila fell in love with the palette and canvass when she was a small girl. Her grandfather, an art collector and leisure artist, taught her to paint and her love for art grows ever since. She has been taking various creative courses since 2000 (until to date) including jewelry making, glass blowing, pottery, quilting and lastly the western abstract painting and print making program at Nafa, Singapore. After obtaining a degree of communication in 1995, Laila joined the corporate world, but after 4 years she left it to join her family's hospital affairs. In 2004 she moved to Singapore to join her husband. She is a proud mother of three boys.
